Why GSIS is so hard to get into
Top resuts, and very few entry points
German Swiss International School runs two parallel streams: an English Stream leading to the IB Diploma, and a German Stream leading to the German Abitur (DIA). For most international families in Hong Kong, the route is the English Stream and the IB, where 2024 results averaged 40 points against a world average of 30.3. Graduates go on to Oxford, Cambridge, ETH Zurich, the Ivy League, and HKU Medicine. It is a serious academic environment, and it is heavily oversubscribed.
What the assessment really tests

GSIS assesses in tiers, and the first tier decides everything. Every applicant sits the CAT4, a cognitive reasoning test. Clear it and you move on to written English and a genuinely demanding maths paper. Miss it, and the application stops there.
CAT4: the gate you have to clear
The first-tier test every applicant sits, and the one that quietly ends most applications. GSIS looks for excellence across all four batteries (verbal, non-verbal, quantitative and spatial): a stanine of 8 or 9, a Standard Age Score around 125 or higher, roughly the 95th percentile. It measures how your child reasons under time, not what they have memorised, so it rewards real preparation, not last-minute cramming.
Written English and Maths
Clear CAT4 and the written papers follow: a timed English paper that exposes the gap between spoken fluency and written control, and a maths paper that is harder than most families expect. Both reward steady, structured preparation, and both are very coachable with the right plan.
Exact formats vary by entry year, and younger applicants also sit an age-appropriate interview or play observation. We confirm the current process directly with admissions for every family.

Is the assessment really free?
Yes, genuinely. There is no cost and no obligation to work with us afterwards. It is how we begin every relationship, and how you decide whether we are right for your family.
Do you have GSIS past papers?
No. We do not have or distribute GSIS past papers, and it would not be ethical to do so. We create our own similarly-styled practice papers, aligned to GSIS's curriculum and based only on publicly available information.
What ages and year groups do you work with?
The best entry points into GSIS are KG1, Year 1, and Year 7. We have also helped children prepare for other years.
Can you guarantee a place at GSIS?
